Your gratitude was sincere. It was also broadcast to a mailing list, twice.
Reply-all isn't bad. Reply-all with nothing in it is bad. The cost of your one click is paid by everyone else's phone.
And then somebody replies all to ask people to stop replying all, which is the same crime with better intentions.
Why it lands badly
It multiplies
One empty reply to 400 people is 400 interruptions to deliver zero facts.
It buries the real thread
The useful answer is now on page two under six "+1"s.
It trains people to mute
After enough noise, people stop reading the list that matters.
Do this instead
Reply to the sender
Thanks is a lovely thing to say to one person.
Use the reaction
Most tools have an emoji or acknowledge button. Nobody gets an email.
Reply all only when you're adding a fact
A correction, a decision, or an answer everyone needs. Otherwise, don't.
If it's already spiralling, don't fix it publicly
Message the owner. Let them send one note. Don't be reply-all number 41.
When it's completely fine
You're correcting wrong information everyone received. You're the decision-maker and this is the decision. Someone asked a question the whole list needs answered.
