Scion 2010 xB Alpine Premium Radio With Video
June 19, 2010
Recently I got a 2010 Scion xB with the Alpine premium head unit. After doing some research online I saw that it was possible to play video from an external source like a dvd player. I made a video that talks about this and I will post a few picks so that maybe you can also get video on your Alpine radio.
First up is the head unit. Alpine has this nice high def head unit that’s an upgrade to the standard radio in the 2010 Scion xB.
After looking into the possibility that it would play video I found out that you need a wire kit to ad video functionality.
Over on this website Optomize Scion sells the kit. Unfortunately the kit has to be purchase from your local dealer. Which may or may not be a freaking nightmare. My dealer’s part department is a bit of a pain to deal with. However they finally got the part in.
The alpine video cable comes in this little box shown here. Inside the box are 2 sets of cables. 1 is for the video and audio. The other is for the backup ground and the reverse wire. Both plug into he back of the head unit. Plus there are a few zip ties to make everything nice and neat. The instructions are decent and easy to follow. Pull out the bezel around the radio and the one beneath the radio. Remove 4 bolts that use a 10mm socket wrench. Make sure to use an extension on that socket wrench. You’ll need some length since the bolts sit in a bit. After that the radio comes out easily and connecting the wires is a snap. The only bitch is that the instructions mistakenly reverses the green and blue wires. For the life of me I couldn’t figure out why the damn thing wasn’t working till I used the blue wire and grounded it. After that the video started workng.
The instructions want you to connect the reverse wire to the reverse cable and the emergency brake cable to the emergency brake wire. I just grounded the cable to one of the bolts that holds the radio in place. It’s probably illegal where you live to have video playing where the driver can see it. So don’t be stupid and watch a movie and plow into a bus full of nuns. Be safe and use common sense.
Here is a shot of the back of the head unit. The second plug on the top row from the left is where the reverse and e brake plug go and the 4th plug is where the video input goes.
as you can see you have alot of other plugs there this info sheet here is great and should shed some light as to what everything does.
Thanks to the guys over on scionlife for comming up with this.
And finally here’s a video showing everything in action.
Got something to say?
